The Minority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has raised concerns about the Mahama administration’s commitment to covering admission fees for first-year students at public universities.

During the approval of ministerial nominees on January 21, 2025, Afenyo-Markin questioned why parents and students were still struggling to pay these fees when the government had promised to absorb the costs.

He specifically pointed to the Education Minister-designate, Haruna Iddrisu, who stated that students who had already paid their admission fees would be reimbursed later in the year.

Afenyo-Markin expressed confusion over why the government didn’t instruct universities to waive the fees upfront if it intended to cover them in the coming months.

He highlighted the financial difficulties faced by many students and their families, calling on the government to expedite the process and ensure that students are not disadvantaged by financial constraints.
