Afenyo-Markin reports to police over alleged assault during protest

The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin is cooperating with an investigation. This inquiry involves an alleged altercation with a police officer during the “Save the Judiciary” demonstration on May 5, 2025.

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is looking into claims that Mr. Afenyo-Markin assaulted a uniformed officer at Parliament House. The investigation began after the CID requested clearance from Speaker Alban Bagbin. He directed Mr. Afenyo-Markin to fully cooperate with the inquiry.

Following this directive, Mr. Afenyo-Markin reported to the Police on May 7 to assist in the investigation. In a new development, the Police have launched a parallel investigation. This follows a counter-petition filed by Mr. Afenyo-Markin, who claims he was assaulted by the same officer.

The incident occurred while he led demonstrators to present a petition at Parliament House for judicial independence. Mr. Afenyo-Markin alleges that as he approached a police barricade, Constable Forson struck him in the chest. This left him dazed and short of breath.

He received assistance from parliamentary security and demonstrators before recovering nearby. Afterward, he continued with his petition submission. The officer involved reportedly fled the scene soon after, raising concerns about accountability.

The Ghana Police Service assures the public that both investigations are thorough and updates will follow as they progress.
