Frank Davies, Chairman of the Constitutional and Legal Committee of the NPP, defended comments by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin. Afenyo-Markin urged judges and the Ghana Bar Association to resist attempts to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. Davies called this a “good call.”
Afenyo-Markin warned that recent events suggest attempts by the NDC government to politicize the judiciary. He emphasized that judges should stand united against these efforts.
On JoyNews' Newsfile, Mr. Davies stated that Afenyo-Markin’s statement was not partisan. He described it as a patriotic appeal to protect judicial integrity.
Davies compared Afenyo-Markin’s comments to concerns raised by civil society about preserving the judiciary's sanctity. He explained that Afenyo-Markin made a national appeal to safeguard the Chief Justice's office.
Davies acknowledged that some may dislike Afenyo-Markin for other reasons. However, he believes his recent comments were appropriate during an official NPP event.
He also responded to former MP Inusah Fuseini's claims about politicization by the NPP. Davies disagreed with Fuseini, stating that such commentary lacks context.
He pointed out that discussions about removing the Chief Justice began with NDC actors before any official process started.
Davies urged everyone to protect the Chief Justice’s office and avoid politicization. He stressed the importance of guarding judicial independence at this time.
