AfriMass network launches mentorship programme to nurture next generation of journalists

Raymond Smith, Founder of the AFRIMASS Network, has launched a new mentorship program. This initiative is part of the Newsroom Business Initiative (NBI). It aims to shape journalism in an age of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital disruption.

The announcement occurred during the NBI’s sustainable newsroom event at BlueCrest University in Accra. This event celebrated World Press Freedom Day on May 2, 2025. Mr. Smith spoke to media professionals, students, and educators about the need for young journalists. He emphasized that they must develop both technical skills and strong ethical frameworks.

"AI is transforming journalism in ways we could not have imagined," he said. It improves speed, accuracy, and access to data-driven insights. However, it also brings risks like misinformation and algorithmic bias. These issues can undermine editorial judgment.

Mr. Smith stressed that as we adopt these tools, they must serve truth and public good. Freedom of expression is vital but should come with responsibility. The mentorship program is a key part of NBI’s mission for media sustainability.

This initiative will connect emerging journalists with experienced professionals and experts. It aims to bridge academic training with real newsroom practices. Participants will receive training in four main areas.

They will gain hands-on experience through workshops and internships focused on news reporting and multimedia storytelling. Integrity in reporting will be emphasized through modules on fact-checking and combating misinformation.

Young journalists will learn how to use AI tools effectively while maintaining journalistic standards. The program will also cover audience engagement, content monetization, and the business side of journalism.

Mr. Smith highlighted the importance of community among participants for collaboration and idea exchange. “Mentorship is not one-sided,” he noted; experienced journalists can learn from fresh perspectives too.

“The future of journalism lies in your hands,” he told students. “This program invests in your potential to meet modern demands.” The mentorship initiative will begin rolling out in phases starting in late 2025, with applications opening in June.

The NBI event served as the launchpad for this mentorship program while celebrating World Press Freedom Day 2025. Organized by AfriMass Network alongside BlueCrest University College, it gathered diverse voices committed to advancing journalism amid AI advancements.
