Africa Day: Injustice and inequalities affect Africans, people of black descent - UN Secretary-General

Africa Day is celebrated on May 25 each year. It honors a continent rich in heritage and diversity. Africa has made remarkable contributions to the global community.

On this day, Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, shared a message. He noted that deep-rooted inequalities still affect Africans and people of African descent.

Guterres highlighted that Africa has the world's youngest population. The continent is becoming a leader in renewable energy and technology. However, it still suffers from historical injustices.

He pointed out that slavery, colonialism, apartheid, and systemic racism have lasting effects. He stated, "This year's theme calls for confronting these shameful legacies."

Mr. Guterres called for reparatory justice based on accountability and equity. He emphasized that Africa sets an example during challenging times.

He mentioned the Pact for the Future adopted in September. This pact seeks greater African representation at the Security Council. It also aims to reform the international financial system for better support.

The pact includes initiatives like the Global Digital Compact. This initiative aims to close the digital divide and promote responsible AI use.

Guterres praised the African Continental Free Trade Area. It promises economic integration and opportunities for jobs and growth.

"We must support Africa's clean-energy sector," he said. He stressed that critical minerals should benefit Africans first.

The Secretary-General assured continued UN support for Africa's peace efforts. This includes tackling terrorism and safeguarding human rights.

"On this Africa Day, let us commit to addressing past wrongs," he concluded. He urged building a sustainable future based on peace and opportunity for all Africans.
