Africa Development Council urges caution amid growing galamsey protest

The Africa Development Council (ADC) is concerned about rising agitation in Ghana. This agitation relates to the government's fight against illegal mining, known as "galamsey."

On Saturday, April 26, the ADC released a statement. They praised citizens for their patriotism and vigilance. These qualities show a commitment to protecting Ghana’s environment and future.

However, the Council warned against putting too much pressure on leaders for quick fixes. They urged everyone to "hasten slowly."

The ADC pointed out that environmental damage from the previous administration is significant. This situation requires careful thought and time for sustainable solutions.

The Council highlighted recent successes, including dismantling a secret "City in the Forest" operation. They commended the government’s proactive steps against illegal mining.

"This achievement shows the administration's seriousness and commitment," said the statement.

The ADC also noted that efforts to combat galamsey occur during an economic recovery. This recovery follows what they called a "catastrophic financial situation" left by the last regime.

Given these challenges, the Council asked organizers of an upcoming demonstration to reconsider their plans. They encouraged postponement in favor of national unity and good faith.

According to the statement, allowing the government space will help introduce innovative mining technologies. It will also speed up restoring degraded lands and polluted water bodies.

The statement ended with a call for dialogue, patience, and collaboration among all stakeholders. These elements are vital for achieving a sustainable and prosperous future for Ghana.
