Renowned Ghanaian statesman and business leader Sir Sam Jonah delivered a strong message. He stated that character is essential for "future-ready leadership for nation building."
His commencement address was to the graduating class of Academic City University on June 7, 2025. He emphasized integrity, compassion, and discipline as key traits for leaders. These qualities can help transform Ghana and Africa.
Sir Sam Jonah asked graduates a crucial question: "What does the future need most from our leaders?" His clear answer echoed in the auditorium: "Character."
He urged the new generation to prioritize ethical strength above all else. "Not degrees — you already have those," he cautioned. Without character, degrees are just documents from an educational institution.
He added, "Not connections — they help but can corrupt without character." He also said, "Not money — it rewards honest work but can lead to greed without character."
Sir Sam Jonah defined character as "the sum of your values and ethics." He stressed that it guides decisions and actions over time.
He warned graduates their future journeys would test their integrity. They would face temptations to compromise or serve themselves instead of their country.
Drawing from his experience in social and corporate spheres, he highlighted integrity's timeless value. "Character is the currency that never loses its value," he declared.
"When you are known for honesty and fairness, people will trust you." This is especially important in developing economies facing financial losses due to lack of integrity.
In a call to action for graduates and the continent, he shared a three-pronged ethical compass: "Let integrity be your compass. Let compassion be your instinct. Let discipline be your shield."
He concluded with a powerful statement about Africa's needs: "Africa does not need more people with power or money. It needs more people with character." His address reminded everyone that true leadership comes from a strong moral foundation, not material wealth or influence.
