Africa had education long before colonizers came – Lumumba

Renowned Pan-Africanist and anti-corruption advocate Prof. P.L.O. Lumumba spoke at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW). He reminded Africans that education did not start with colonization.

Lumumba noted that many people view Africa's history as beginning after colonialism. He said, "We talk about Ghana as if it started in 1957." This perspective overlooks Africa’s rich history.

He expressed disappointment over how Africa's past is often ignored. "We discuss the 54 recognized countries as if there was no life before independence," he added.

According to Lumumba, education existed in Africa long before Europeans arrived. He stated, "It is false to say we did not exist before colonizers came."

He emphasized that Africa was advanced in knowledge and civilization. "When Europeans lived in darkness, West Africa had organized kingdoms," he explained.

"There were universities and forms of education without certificates," he concluded.
