Former Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, spoke about Africa's innovation potential. He emphasized that the main challenge is creating systems to support these innovations.
Dr. Bawumia addressed the Cambridge Africa Business Conference on May 17, 2025. The theme was "Africa’s Digital Transformation: Building Resilient Economies Through Innovation." He stated, “Africa does not lack innovation. We lack systems that scale it.”
He noted that Africa has many creative ideas and an entrepreneurial spirit. However, supportive structures are missing. Reliable infrastructure, access to capital, and a culture of trust are essential for growth.
Dr. Bawumia envisioned a future where African innovations cross borders. For example, a tech start-up in Nairobi could serve clients in São Paulo. A shea butter cooperative in Tamale could sell directly to buyers in Tokyo using blockchain.
He stressed that African innovations should be seen as the norm, not exceptions. He urged nations to build strong systems and ecosystems for nurturing innovations. This approach can unlock Africa's full economic potential.
