OSP Questions Ofori-Atta's Special Treatment Claim
The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) is questioning Kenneth Nana Yaw Ofori-Atta. He is the former Finance Minister under investigation for alleged corruption.
Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng held a press briefing in Accra yesterday. He stated that no one is above the law, regardless of their position. He mentioned former President John Dramani Mahama as an example of compliance.
Agyebeng said, “We didn’t have to chase him around the world.” He questioned why Ofori-Atta thinks he deserves special treatment.
Ofori-Atta missed a scheduled interview on June 2. As a result, the OSP declared him wanted and a fugitive from justice again. Agyebeng confirmed that extradition proceedings have started.
An INTERPOL Red Notice has been issued to help arrest him abroad. The OSP began investigating Ofori-Atta on January 24, 2025, naming him as a suspect in multiple cases.
He was summoned for questioning on February 10 but claimed he was abroad for medical treatment. The OSP accused him of stalling the investigation with “utter bad faith.”
Medical Excuses Rejected
The Special Prosecutor outlined communications with Ofori-Atta’s legal team. They noted a pattern of non-compliance from his side.
Initially, he cited an indefinite medical stay abroad. Later, he mentioned possible surgery on March 20-21. The OSP extended the deadline and rescheduled his interview for June 2.
However, the surgery did not happen, and they were informed only on May 28. His lawyers then revealed a new cancer diagnosis and suggested a video statement instead of an in-person interview.
The OSP rejected this offer firmly. Agyebeng stated that suspects cannot dictate how investigations are conducted.
Legal Action and Broader Impact
Within half an hour of the press briefing, the SP requested international enforcement assistance via INTERPOL. They also began securing Mr. Ofori-Atta’s extradition.
Agyebeng emphasized that no one is beyond inquiry by this office due to title or status.
