Bernard Ahiafor, Chairman of Parliament’s Appointments Committee, has warned that Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin will face referral to the Privileges Committee unless he offers a full apology to the Clerk, Gifty Jiagge-Gobah, following his accusations of partisanship.
Afenyo-Markin’s allegations that Jiagge-Gobah favored the NDC sparked a disruptive brawl, which halted the vetting process and prompted Speaker Alban Bagbin to suspend four MPs.
Ahiafor condemned Afenyo-Markin’s remarks as reckless and unprovoked and urged an apology to resolve the matter. If Afenyo-Markin refuses, the disciplinary process will proceed.
Despite the fallout, Afenyo-Markin enjoys strong support from the NPP, who have criticized Speaker Bagbin’s actions as undermining their accountability role.
