Ahiagbah condemns raid on Wontumi’s home, warns against political intimidation

Richard Ahiagbah, the Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has spoken out. He condemned what he sees as a campaign to intimidate opposition voices. He believes these actions threaten Ghana’s democracy and will ultimately fail.

Ahiagbah's comments came after a security operation on May 23. This operation took place at the home of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi. He is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP. The raid involved National Security operatives and Police officers.

In an interview with Joy News, Ahiagbah criticized the government's actions. He urged respect for democratic principles and due process. “Anyone prioritizing politics over democracy is not a friend of this state,” he stated. He reminded that this Fourth Republic belongs to the people.

While he acknowledged the state's right to invite individuals for questioning, he emphasized lawful conduct. “Do so appropriately,” he said about invitations for questioning. Ahiagbah expressed concern that attempts to silence political voices would not succeed.

The government has not yet released an official statement regarding this incident. Reports indicate that security officers surrounded Chairman Wontumi’s home early Friday morning. However, the reasons for this operation remain unclear.

Chairman Wontumi has accused President John Dramani Mahama’s administration of political persecution. He claims his businesses and financial assets have been targeted since Mahama returned to power.
