Akandoh urges dialogue to resolve nurses’ strike, cautions against rushed decisions

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, highlighted the need for dialogue. This is crucial to resolve the ongoing issue with the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA). The GRNMA is currently on a nationwide strike.

The National Labour Commission (NLC) has obtained an injunction to stop the strike. However, the GRNMA claims it has not received any official notice from the NLC. They maintain that their strike continues.

On Citi Eyewitness News, Akandoh explained that this dispute involves an agreement made before the current administration. He stressed that it should be handled carefully and with understanding. Rushing into implementation without grasping the issues can lead to problems.

He noted that this agreement was meant to be implemented in 2024. It was inherited by the current government, which means they must consider both assets and liabilities. Governance requires understanding and engagement for what is best for the country.

Akandoh emphasized that implementing decisions isn't straightforward. He urged people to engage and understand why certain agreements have not been executed yet. Simply continuing previous policies without review is not effective.

He also called on striking nurses to reconsider their decision and return to work.
