Akonta Mining Limited has denied claims of illegal mining in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve. This follows the revocation of its license by Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah.
At a press briefing on April 21, 2025, the Minister accused Akonta Mining of operating unlawfully. The company is owned by Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi. The Minister stated that Akonta Mining holds a valid license outside forest reserves but has encroached on protected areas.
In response, Akonta Mining called the allegations "false and misleading." They described the license revocation as a breach of natural justice.
The company stated, “We are not responsible for activities in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve.” They emphasized that responsibility lies with the Forestry Commission and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.
Akonta Mining expressed concern over state institutions shifting blame to them. They criticized the Minister's public accusations without investigation or hearing. The company labeled this action as unfair and politically motivated.
They reiterated their commitment to legal operations and transparency. “We assure the Ghanaian public that we have nothing to hide,” they said. All documents and permits are available for public scrutiny.
This situation arises amid growing national concern about illegal mining's impact on Ghana’s forests and water bodies.
