Akonta Mining Has Become A Criminal Syndicate -Armah Buah

Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah is the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources. He recently called Akonta Mining Company Ltd. a "criminal syndicate."

At a press briefing in Accra on April 21, 2025, he announced a major crackdown on illegal mining. He cited Akonta Mining as an example of corruption and environmental destruction.

“Akonta Mining sells access to the Aboi Forest Reserve for GHC 300,000 per concession,” he stated. Illegal miners are protected by Akonta and have harmed the River Tano and nearby forests.

The minister emphasized that the government will not stop until illegal mining is eradicated. “We want our waters to run blue and our forests to be green,” he said.

He shared findings from an undercover investigation into Akonta Mining's operations. The company has a legal lease but allegedly trespassed into protected areas in Western North Region.

The investigation revealed that Akonta was subleasing forest concessions to illegal miners like “Mr. Henry” and “Shark.” These miners paid weekly royalties of 250 grams of gold to Akonta Mining.

The criminal network reportedly includes some Forestry Commission officials and security personnel. They allegedly received illegal fees for protection and tips about raids.

“This is economic sabotage and treason against our environment,” the minister declared.

On April 17, 2025, an intelligence-led operation raided six illegal mining sites linked to Akonta in Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve.

In response, the Minerals Commission will revoke Akonta Mining’s lease immediately. The Attorney-General has taken over the investigation for thoroughness.

All implicated forestry officials will be interdicted, while linked security officers are under investigation.

“This is a warning to large-scale mining holders abusing their leases,” he cautioned.

The minister urged the media and public to report illegal mining activities promptly.

“To youth engaged in illegal mining: there are better alternatives,” he said. “We are ready to support you.”

He warned those who continue with illegal activities that the state will act decisively against them.

He concluded with a strong message: “We will ensure every financier faces justice publicly.”
