Akonta Mining Has Become A Criminal Syndicate -Armah Buah

Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah is the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources. He recently called Akonta Mining Company Ltd. a "criminal syndicate."

At a press briefing in Accra on April 21, 2025, he announced a significant crackdown on illegal mining. He described Akonta Mining as an example of corruption and environmental destruction.

“Akonta Mining sells access to the Aboi Forest Reserve for GHC 300,000 per concession,” he stated. Illegal miners are protected by Akonta and have harmed the River Tano and nearby forests.

The minister emphasized the government's commitment to ending illegal mining. “We will not stop until galamsey is completely uprooted,” he declared.

He shared findings from an undercover investigation into Akonta Mining's operations. The company allegedly trespassed into protected areas in the Western North Region.

It turned these areas into hubs for illegal mining activities. An individual named Mr. Ayisi was identified as Akonta’s liaison, subleasing forest concessions to illegal miners like “Mr. Henry” and “Shark.”

These miners paid weekly royalties of 250 grams of gold to Akonta Mining under a profit-sharing agreement. The minister noted that some Forestry Commission officials received portions of these illegal fees for protection.

“This is economic sabotage and treason against our environment,” he said firmly.

On April 17, 2025, an intelligence-led operation raided six illegal mining sites linked to Akonta in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve.

In response, Armah-Kofi Buah directed the Minerals Commission to revoke Akonta's lease immediately. The Attorney-General has taken over the investigation for thoroughness.

All implicated forestry officials will be interdicted, while security officers involved are under investigation.

“This is a warning to large-scale mining holders using legal leases to destroy our forests,” he cautioned.

The minister urged media and public vigilance in reporting illegal mining activities.

“To youth engaged in illegal mining: there are better alternatives,” he said. “We are ready to support you.”

He warned those who continue with illegal activities that the state will act decisively against them.

He concluded with a strong message: “We will ensure every financier and enabler faces justice.”
