Former Chief Executive Officer of the Volta River Authority (VRA), Ing. Kirk Koffi, highlighted the importance of the Akosombo Hydroelectric Power Plant. His comments come amid ongoing power outages in Ghana.
In an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Face to Face, he called Akosombo the backbone of Ghana's electricity supply. He emphasized that the entire electricity system relies heavily on this plant.
"I always tell people that Akosombo is the heart of this nation," he said. "Without it, you cannot run a system; the lights cannot stay on."
He explained that during a system collapse, Akosombo is essential for recovery and stabilization. Other plants, like Kpone or thermal units, depend on it to restart after outages.
"Akosombo can provide at least 160 to 170 megawatts from each machine," he noted. Currently, its maximum output is 1,020 megawatts.
