President Nana Akufo-Addo has inaugurated Ghana’s first standard gauge railway, the 97-kilometer Tema-Mpakadan line, at a ceremony held at Tema Harbour on November 22.

The $447 million project, funded by India-Exim Bank, is a milestone in Ghana’s transportation sector, integrating rail, road, and inland water transport.

The railway connects Tema Port to Buipe Port via the Volta Lake, promising reduced road congestion, lower transportation costs, and enhanced trade efficiency.

It also offers a reliable alternative for freight and passenger movement, particularly in underserved regions.

Describing the railway as a “lifeline” for economic growth, President Akufo-Addo pledged to expand the network under the revised 2020 Railway Master Plan.

He urged stakeholders to protect the infrastructure, highlighting its transformative benefits for communities and businesses.
