In response to growing calls for action, President Akufo-Addo has ordered a crackdown on illegal small-scale mining (galamsey), involving both the police and military.
This decision follows a national security meeting assessing the environmental damage caused by galamsey.
The Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Samuel Abu Jinapor, announced that Regional Security Councils will intensify enforcement efforts and may decommission illegal mining equipment.
The crackdown comes amid threats from Organised Labour of a nationwide strike if the government fails to act by the end of September.
The Ghana Water Company Limited has reported severe water supply issues in Cape Coast and Elmina due to galamsey.
