Tension is mounting at the Ghana Audit Service amid allegations that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo plans to replace Auditor-General Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu just hours before his tenure ends on January 7, 2025.
Sources indicate that the President intends to appoint Eugenia Shorme Nortey, a Deputy Auditor-General, as his successor.
Staff have expressed anger, claiming Mrs. Nortey’s rapid rise to her current role makes her unqualified for the top position.
Critics allege the appointment aims to obstruct investigations into financial irregularities during Akufo-Addo’s administration.
The timing of this move, set just a day before John Dramani Mahama assumes office, has drawn comparisons to previous transitions, sparking public debate about its implications for the Audit Service’s independence.
