Kwasi Kwarteng, a member of the NPP communications team, spoke about former President Akufo-Addo's legacy. He believes this legacy is the NPP’s strongest asset for future campaigns.
Kwarteng warned party members to be careful in their ambitions. He urged them not to undermine Akufo-Addo's legacy. He stated, “As we pursue our ambition to lead NPP, we should be cautious not to denigrate the legacy of former President Akufo-Addo.”
His comments followed Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's remarks on the party's recent election defeat. Bawumia cited several reasons for this loss, including hardship and government arrogance.
He mentioned issues like the e-levy and debt restructuring as contributing factors. During a party event in Takoradi, he said people complained about living costs and government actions.
Bawumia noted that the party had suggested reshuffling ministerial portfolios but did not act on it. He lamented that promises made by the president were not fulfilled.
Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere, a political analyst from the University of Cape Coast, criticized Akufo-Addo’s leadership. He claimed that Professor Mike Oquaye’s report blames him for the NPP’s defeat.
Otchere stated that 68% of survey respondents held Akufo-Addo responsible for the loss. He added that around 30% blamed Bawumia and about 40% blamed Ken Ofori-Atta.
He argued that some individuals within the government harmed the party but avoided accountability. This avoidance allows their influence to persist within the NPP.
In summary, Kwarteng emphasized preserving Akufo-Addo's legacy while addressing internal criticisms within the party.
