The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has criticized President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo's newly formed five-member ministerial committee to address illegal mining (galamsey), calling it "dead on arrival."
GNAT’s General Secretary, Thomas Musah, argued that the committee, chaired by National Security Minister Albert Kan-Dapaah, lacks fresh ideas and that most members are preoccupied with upcoming elections.
GNAT demands immediate action, including declaring a state of emergency, evacuating mining equipment from forests and water bodies, revoking mining licenses, deploying security forces, and creating a special court to prosecute those involved in galamsey.
