Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the former Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, defended former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. This comes after some New Patriotic Party (NPP) members blamed him for a potential defeat in the 2024 elections.
In a Facebook post shared by NDC's Edudzi Tamakloe, she sarcastically thanked those criticizing Akufo-Addo. She wrote, “Thank you to all of you who are busy vilifying him today and blaming him for our defeat. I am sure you would have given him credit if we had won.”
Owusu-Ekuful highlighted that Akufo-Addo held the party together for 16 years. She noted that his goal was to hand over power to an NPP president. She emphasized that he financed party structures every month for eight years.
She mentioned that he provided monthly allowances to constituencies and regions. He also topped up salaries for MPs beyond their take-home pay. Despite these contributions, some now claim he wanted to destroy the party he helped build.
She praised Akufo-Addo’s achievements, stating he kept schools running and created jobs. He built more roads than any previous leader but is now seen as a villain.
Owusu-Ekuful further defended his legacy, saying he accepts blame despite his sacrifices for democracy and the rule of law. She pointed out that not everyone could be appointed to government positions, leading to dissatisfaction among supporters.
She questioned whether the NPP is worth fighting for if they do not appreciate leaders like Akufo-Addo.
