Akwatia MP challenges contempt conviction at Supreme Court

Supreme Court of Ghana Supreme Court of Ghana

Akwatia Member of Parliament (MP), Ernest Yaw Kumi, has filed an application at the Supreme Court seeking to overturn his February 19 contempt conviction by the Koforidua High Court.

His lawyer, Gary Nimako Marfo, argues that Justice Emmanuel Senyo Amadehe erred in assuming jurisdiction over the Akwatia parliamentary election petition before the Electoral Commission had gazetted the results.

Yaw Kumi was convicted for defying an interim injunction against his swearing-in.

However, his legal team claims the judge breached natural justice by proceeding with the case despite pending motions and showing bias by denying his lawyer audience.

The MP seeks to nullify the contempt ruling and bench warrant against him. The Supreme Court has yet to schedule a hearing.
