Renowned Ghanaian businessman and philanthropist Alhaji Seidu Agongo has donated GHS500,000. This contribution supports the newly launched 'Mahama Cares' initiative. The program aims to provide affordable healthcare to vulnerable communities in Ghana.
Alhaji Agongo made the donation on Tuesday during the launch in Accra. Many prominent business leaders attended to show their support for the initiative. President John Mahama also contributed by donating his six months' salary in advance.
This donation is part of Agongo's efforts to help vulnerable people. He encourages others to share their resources for a better society.
In Ghana, wealth carries responsibility. The gap between rich and poor continues to widen. Alhaji Agongo, founder of the collapsed Heritage Bank, exemplifies this idea. His compassion offers hope where despair once reigned.
Agongo's philanthropic work spans from Northern Region villages to urban neighborhoods in Accra. He regularly distributes food, provides housing support, and offers emergency financial assistance. "When I see a child smile because they have enough to eat, I'm reminded why God blessed me," he says humbly.
He believes private sector involvement is crucial for addressing social challenges. "As business leaders, we must support initiatives that impact ordinary Ghanaians," he stated. The 'Mahama Cares' program addresses immediate needs while building sustainable solutions for vulnerable communities.
Agongo praised President Mahama’s salary donation as a sign of commitment. He hopes it will inspire more Ghanaians to join the cause.
The 'Mahama Cares' initiative will provide direct support through food assistance, healthcare access, educational support, and skills development across all regions of Ghana.
This donation adds to Agongo's record of philanthropy in health and education sectors. Recently, he donated food to communities in Bongo District and supported various educational programs nationwide.
The new pediatric Emergency Child Block at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital showcases his commitment to healthcare improvement in Ghana. Funded entirely by his donations, this facility has transformed child healthcare conditions.
Medical staff report that children now receive world-class care instead of being cramped or treated on floors.
Agongo has also funded children's education across the country—from primary school pupils in remote areas to university students studying medicine and law—many of whom have never met him.
Additionally, he has paid hospital bills for many individuals; most recently, he covered costs for new mothers in selected hospitals across Ghana in March.
