The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has made an important announcement. All Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) must now budget for their power consumption.
During a meeting on May 15, Jinapor stressed the need for MDAs to pay their electricity bills. He noted that some critical institutions will have exemptions. These include the health sector, education, security agencies, and the presidency.
In the health sector, only laboratories, theatres, and wards are exempted. In education, dormitories and restaurants are not included; only lecture halls are affected. Jinapor mentioned that these classifications will be approved by Parliament soon.
Additionally, the Ministry of Energy is seeking 1.1 billion Ghana Cedis urgently. This funding is needed to purchase liquid fuel for power generation. Current fuel stocks are estimated to last only 2.6 days.
