Alleged assault: Afenyo-Markin only retaliated after attack – Ofori Ampofo

Bright Ofori Ampofo is the Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfro. He defended Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin during the #SaveTheJudiciary demonstration. Ampofo stated that Afenyo-Markin reacted after being struck by a police officer.

A viral video showed Afenyo-Markin in a heated exchange with officers. This sparked public debate about his conduct. However, Ampofo insists that the lawmaker was provoked.

On Channel One’s Newsroom, Ampofo described what happened before the confrontation. He said, “Just when we were about to cross the barricade, this police officer charged and hit him on the chest.” The blow was so strong that Afenyo-Markin nearly collapsed.

Ampofo explained that they took him to Parliament's entrance for water. This delay pushed back the petition presentation by about 30 minutes. Afenyo-Markin complained of dizziness and needed to rest before continuing.

He expressed frustration over not having enough security during the event. Ampofo questioned the officer’s political allegiance, suggesting it might have been deliberate. “I am sure he is an NDC police officer,” he said.

Ampofo emphasized that Afenyo-Markin's reaction was self-defense. “He was afraid another blow would come,” he added. They quickly whisked him away for safety.
