Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, the Majority Chief Whip in Parliament, has spoken out. He urged suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo to let the law take its course.
Dafeamekpor believes Torkornoo's actions suggest she feels guilty. He made these comments during an interview on Channel One TV with Umaru Sanda Amadu. He said, “I think that she should rather allow [the law to work]. She is acting in a manner that is presumptive of guilt.”
His remarks come after Torkornoo expressed her distress over the impeachment process against her. She filed a supplementary affidavit with the Supreme Court as part of her legal challenge. In it, she claims her fundamental rights are being violated.
Torkornoo described several troubling incidents during the proceedings. She mentioned being denied access for her family and subjected to searches. She also noted restrictions on communication devices for herself and her lawyers while petitioners had access.
She stated, “They want to break me. What I am going through is not even meted out to persons accused of treason.” Torkornoo emphasized that the court is crucial for protecting judicial independence.
She criticized how she has been treated compared to those facing serious charges. Torkornoo revealed she has not been informed about the allegations against her or how a prima facie case was determined.
“How can I defend myself when I don’t even know what I’m defending against?” she asked. She pointed out that previous Article 146 proceedings were held in judicial facilities, unlike hers in a high-security zone.
Torkornoo called this process a “mockery of justice.” She believes it aims to unjustly remove her from office as Chief Justice.
On May 23, 2025, despite receiving processes filed in court, the committee continued their inquiry into her case. Torkornoo warned that this situation threatens every justice's security of tenure and undermines the Constitution itself.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has dismissed Torkornoo's application for an injunction against the impeachment process.
