Aluta Continua – Catholic Archbishop demands real action on galamsey

The Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, John Bonaventure Kwofie, has urged President John Dramani Mahama to take action against illegal mining. This practice is commonly known as galamsey.

During a homily at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Parish in Accra, Archbishop Kwofie questioned the government's commitment to stopping environmental damage from galamsey.

He stated, “Nothing is too late for the President to say ‘enough is enough.’” He acknowledged that galamsey is a complex issue but emphasized the need to fight it actively.

Referencing the President’s recent May Day speech, he challenged the government’s credibility. He asked, “Is that make-believe talk, or will you take it seriously?” He stressed that people want action, not just words.

Archbishop Kwofie expressed concern over ongoing environmental destruction. He said, “We are poisoning our waters and losing our forests.”

He called for visible enforcement from security agencies. “Let us see our gallant men and women of the armed forces take action,” he urged.

He concluded with a message of resistance and hope: “Are we fighting to regain our forest zones and river bodies? Aluta Continua.”
