Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He has accused the John Mahama-led administration of political witch-hunting and economic sabotage. This follows a search at his home by police and National Security operatives.
The operatives arrived with a search warrant, which JoyNews reported on. They described their actions as a lawful operation.
After the incident, Chairman Wontumi spoke to journalists. He believes this is a targeted political attack. “Am I not a Ghanaian anymore?” he asked President Mahama. He expressed frustration over being treated differently after Mahama won the election.
Wontumi urged NPP supporters and Ghanaians to speak out against what he sees as abuse of power. “Ghanaians, rise! Arise, Ghanaians!” he called out. He believes Mahama's treatment of him reflects poorly on all NPP supporters.
He defended his role in politics and questioned the government's justification for their actions. “Was I ever a Vice President? Have I ever chaired a board?” he asked rhetorically. “I am only the chairman of a political party.”
Wontumi accused the Mahama administration of harming his businesses and freezing his bank accounts. “You collapsed my business back in 2013,” he claimed. He stated that since Mahama took office, all his operations have stopped.
Chairman Wontumi’s comments have ignited new political debate about state power use. The treatment of opposition figures under the current administration is now under scrutiny.
