Amaliba demands transparency on disposal of seized narcotics

Abraham Amaliba, a private lawyer and member of the NDC, has raised concerns about how seized narcotics are handled in Ghana. He is calling for more transparency from authorities.

Amaliba spoke on TV3’s Keypoints program. He questioned the current processes for disposing of confiscated drugs. “They need to tell us how these drugs are disposed of,” he said. He also asked about previous consignments and whether they have been destroyed.

His comments follow increased activity by security agencies. These agencies have made many arrests related to drug trafficking in the last three months. Amaliba noted that this surge in arrests exceeds the performance of the past eight years.

“Ghana has long been a transit point for drugs, then we became users,” he explained. “Recently, security agencies have worked hard to arrest drug barons.”

He emphasized that if so many arrests can be made in three months, what happened in the past eight years? “Were state agencies not up to the task?” he asked. “What were they doing? They weren’t making these arrests until now.”
