Court Grants Injunction Against Mr. John Peter Amewu
The Court of Appeal in Koforidua granted an injunction on Monday. This injunction stops Mr. John Peter Amewu from claiming to be the Member of Parliament for Hohoe Constituency.
The ruling also prevents the Speaker of Parliament from processing any payments to Mr. Amewu. This includes any entitlements he may have as a former MP. The decision will remain until the appeal is heard and decided.
Professor Margaret Kweku and other petitioners filed the application. They are from the Santrokofi, Akpafu, Lolobi, and Likpe (SALL) areas. This legal challenge questions Mr. Amewu’s parliamentary status.
This case follows a previous ruling on July 29, 2024. The Ho High Court dismissed an election petition against Mr. Amewu due to jurisdiction issues.
A Notice of Appeal was filed shortly after that ruling on July 31, 2024. The injunction application was submitted on December 23, 2024.
During the hearing, petitioners' lawyer Mr. Tsatsu Tsikata argued for justice in restricting benefits to Mr. Amewu until the appeal is resolved.
Mr. Amewu's lawyer, Mr. Kofitse, countered that his client was not at fault. He claimed any confusion came from the Electoral Commission.
Justice Bright Mensah led the panel that ruled on this case. Other judges included Justice Noble Nkrumah and Justice Hafisata Amaleboba.
This decision marks an important step in the ongoing legal battle. Further proceedings are expected in the coming months.
