Renowned law professor Kwaku Azar has criticized former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu. This criticism follows Amidu's attack on Professor H. Kwasi Prempeh. Prempeh is currently leading the Constitutional Review Committee.
On May 7, 2025, Azar posted on Facebook. He described Amidu’s remarks as a sign of “clinging to relevance.” He also noted that Amidu misunderstands the role of the Constitutional Review Committee.
Amidu publicly questioned Prempeh’s involvement in constitutional reform. He suggested that Prempeh’s leadership was not aligned with the review's goals.
Azar, a strong advocate for constitutional reforms, dismissed these criticisms as misplaced. He argued that Amidu lacks understanding of how constitutional reforms work.
Azar stated that Amidu's comments show his struggle for relevance. He believes Amidu is distorting the roles of those involved in the process.
“Amidu sounds like yesterday’s man,” Azar wrote. “He clings to relevance by distorting others' roles.”
Azar explained that the committee operates within a defined mandate. As chair, Prempeh is fulfilling his responsibilities outlined in the Constitution.
He also pointed out that during his time as Special Prosecutor, Amidu showed confusion about his own mandate. Azar believes this confusion affects Amidu's views on constitutional matters.
“His tenure revealed confusion about his own mandate,” Azar remarked. He called for a more informed approach to discussing constitutional issues.
