Ammunition bound for Benin intercepted - Police

The Volta Regional Police Command intercepted a large quantity of ammunition. This happened during a routine operation at the Tadzewu-Mitsrikasa Police barrier. The location is on the Accra-Benin Highway.

The incident took place early on Thursday, April 18, 2025.

According to a statement from DSP Felix Danku, officers searched a Hyundai bus. The bus had registration number GR 8246-Q and was traveling from Accra to Benin.

During the search, police found 60 cartons of AAA cartridges. This amounts to 15,000 pieces of AAA ammunition. They also discovered 72 cartons of BB cartridges, totaling 18,000 pieces of BB ammo. These were hidden in sacks under luggage.

The driver, Abasou Fousseni, aged 45, and co-driver Salisu Jalilu, aged 38, were arrested. Both denied knowing about the illegal cargo. However, further investigation revealed that the co-driver loaded the ammunition into the vehicle.

To minimize disruption for passengers, police allowed the bus to continue its journey. They ensured alternative transport arrangements were made for passengers while keeping the co-driver in custody for further questioning.

The suspect is expected in court on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.

The Ghana Police Service reiterated its commitment to fighting transnational crime and ensuring peace in the region.
