An investigative journalist has won an $18 million defamation case. Anas Aremeyaw Anas sued Ghanaian MP Kennedy Agyapong after he called him a "criminal." This was in response to Anas's investigation into football corruption.
Anas first filed the case in Ghana but lost. He then took it to the US, where Agyapong owns property, and won. Anas believes his victory sends a strong message to young journalists.
He told the BBC that the money is not his main concern. Instead, he hopes it encourages journalists to hold powerful figures accountable.
During the trial, Agyapong accused Anas of being involved in the murder of journalist Ahmed Suale. Anas is still grieving for Suale and believes other suspects remain free.
He visits Suale's grave for quiet reflection. He recalls how Suale once promised to continue his work if anything happened to him.
Anas criticized Ghana's legal system, claiming many judges favor the wrongdoers. He chose to bring his case in New Jersey because that’s where Agyapong was during a podcast interview.
A jury awarded Anas $18 million in damages this month. The decision included $8 million in punitive damages against Agyapong.
Anas expressed happiness over the verdict, calling it vindication for journalists everywhere. He believes it encourages resilience among African journalists.
Now that Agyapong must pay damages, Anas feels confident about receiving the funds. His legal team assessed Agyapong's properties before filing the case.
While he cannot guarantee payment, he trusts his team's preparations. Anas hopes this case shows that African journalists can challenge powerful individuals effectively.
He stated they are ready to stand up for justice and accountability when necessary.
