Kwaku Ansa-Asare, former Director of the Ghana School of Law, defends Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. This follows allegations of financial misconduct regarding her international travels. He believes public officials can benefit from their appointment terms.
His comments come after Daniel Ofori submitted a petition to President John Dramani Mahama. Ofori claims the Chief Justice misused over GHS 261,000 in state funds for personal trips abroad with her husband and daughter.
Ofori also alleges that the Chief Justice withdrew an additional GHS 75,580 for a trip to Tanzania. He states she did not account for a $14,000 imprest allocated for this journey.
Ofori is one of three individuals petitioning the President to remove the Chief Justice. They cite alleged misconduct and abuse of office as reasons.
On April 23, 2025, Kwaku Ansa-Asare spoke on Citi FM about the situation. He emphasized that the issue should be viewed through her contractual entitlements.
He stated that traveling with family relates to her employment contract. These matters arise from the terms and conditions set during her appointment.
Ansa-Asare believes there is nothing wrong with an office holder enjoying their benefits.
