Anti-Galamsey Task Force launches devastating blow against illegal mining in Offin Shelterbelt Reserve

In a pre-dawn offensive, a team from NAIMOS, the Forestry Commission, and the National Security Secretariat launched a successful operation. This three-day effort targeted illegal mining in the Offin Shelterbelt Forest Reserve. The operation began at 4:00 AM on Wednesday, June 4, 2025.

This crackdown is a significant step in the government's fight against illegal mining, known as galamsey. During the operation, authorities seized 12 excavators, 2 motorbikes, and 2 pump-action shotguns. They also arrested five suspects, including one Chinese national.

The national task force joined Forestry Commission officers at Nkawie. They stormed the forest reserve and caught illegal miners by surprise. Many miners fled in panic, leaving behind their equipment and camps.

To deter future encroachment, military personnel destroyed the workers' camps. This action sends a strong message to illegal operators nationwide. The arrested individuals include Simon Mensah, Edward Addo, Aboagye Foster, and Amoah Justice.

Identity documents belonging to Ayogsum Agnes and Jonathan Asigre were also found at the site. All suspects have been handed over to Nkawie District Police for further investigation. The confiscated excavators are now secured at the 4th Infantry Battalion Barracks.

This operation is part of a broader strategy led by Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah. He aims to curb illegal exploitation of Ghana's natural resources. Minister Buah reiterated his Ministry’s zero-tolerance policy on galamsey.

He emphasized that no one will be spared in restoring environmental integrity. “This is not a one-off,” he stated. “We are increasing operations across the country.” He stressed that Ghana’s forests and water bodies must be protected at all costs.

With this successful crackdown, government efforts to restore degraded lands continue to grow stronger. Further updates will follow as investigations progress.
