Anti-Witchcraft Bill: Amnesty International Ghana urges swift passage

The Country Director of Amnesty International Ghana has urged Parliament to pass the Anti-Witchcraft Bill quickly. This bill aims to outlaw witchcraft accusations and attacks.

Genevieve Partington spoke with the Ghana News Agency in Accra. She expressed hope that the bill would become law after passing through Parliament.

Partington noted that there has been no pushback from the government so far. They have indicated they will sign it once it passes.

The Anti-Witchcraft Bill seeks to criminalize witchcraft accusations. It aims to protect vulnerable individuals and strengthen social cohesion.

Additionally, the bill will make it illegal to accuse someone of witchcraft. It will establish protective measures for victims and provide a legal pathway for justice.

Partington called for government intervention to improve conditions for victims in camps. Many face harsh living conditions before their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

She highlighted that many women lack access to basic services like healthcare, clean water, and sanitation.

Partington criticized past governments for failing to ensure adequate food, safe housing, and clean water in these camps.

She also stated that the government's failure to investigate "witch attackers" leads to ongoing accusations.
