The Generational Rights Protection Society is protesting illegal mining, known as galamsey. They projected videos of environmental destruction onto a large screen in front of Jubilee House in Accra.
Despite the demonstrations on Monday, the group has not yet submitted their petition to the presidency. They also stopped at the Ghana Police Service headquarters during their protest.
Co-Convenor Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah offered a traditional prayer for the police. He stressed that divine intervention is needed to strengthen security services against illegal mining.
"We need to pray for our police to have strength and wisdom," Afrifa Mensah said. The group plans to continue their protest over the next two days.
On day two, protesters will gather at Obra Spot in Accra. On the final day, they will present their petition to the presidency. This petition will outline demands for a clear plan to tackle illegal mining in Ghana.
The Generational Rights Protection Society is committed to holding leaders accountable. They aim to protect the environment for future generations.
