Appiagyei-Atua: Protest by Minority over Wontumi’s arrest unnecessary and theatrical

Professor Kwadwo Appiagyei-Atua, a law lecturer at the University of Ghana, criticized the Minority in Parliament. He called their protest against Bernard Antwi Boasiako's detention overly dramatic. Wontumi, known as Chairman Wontumi, is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP.

Wontumi was arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on May 27. He had previously been detained by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID). He faces multiple allegations related to his arrest.

On May 28, he was granted bail of GH¢50 million. The bail conditions included two verified sureties. However, his release has been delayed due to a pending High Court application regarding these terms.

Minority MPs walked out of Parliament on May 29. They marched to EOCO headquarters and staged a sit-down protest. They demanded Wontumi’s immediate release on self-recognisance bail, citing his public profile and low flight risk.

Professor Appiagyei-Atua spoke on Channel One TV on May 31. He dismissed the protest as unnecessary and politically motivated. He expected the NPP team to follow due process instead of staging a walkout.

He described their actions as creating drama that could lead to lawlessness. He noted that some lawlessness occurred when a journalist was assaulted during the protest.

Appiagyei-Atua expressed disappointment in protesting MPs who are lawyers. He questioned why they ignored legal protocols for public theatrics. This choice creates a perception that they want to politicize the situation.
