President John Dramani Mahama has issued a strong warning to political appointees. His administration will enforce strict sanctions for violations of the new Code of Conduct. This applies to everyone, regardless of their status or influence.
The Code was officially launched on Monday, May 5. It sets clear ethical boundaries for public officials. For example, it prohibits awarding government contracts to oneself or family members. President Mahama called such actions a betrayal of public trust.
He stressed the seriousness of this new policy. “Using insider knowledge for personal benefit is unacceptable,” he said. He warned against awarding contracts connected to oneself or close family members. Consequences for these breaches will be non-negotiable.
Sanctions may include reprimands, suspensions, or dismissals. The President also emphasized the need for transparency from all appointees. “If you are a dormant partner in any business engaging with your ministry, disclose it in writing,” he stated.
This disclosure must be official and not through phone calls or relatives. Failure to comply will lead to disciplinary action. The new Code is part of efforts to improve accountability and integrity in public service institutions.
Mahama has also imposed a three-month salary forfeiture on asset declaration defaulters.
