Appointments Committee Chair explains ‘disorderly’ vetting, promises improvement

Bernard Ahiafor Bernard Ahiafor

First Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Appointments Committee Chair, Bernard Ahiafor, has addressed concerns about the perceived disorder during the vetting of President Mahama’s first three ministerial nominees.

Heated exchanges involving Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin and interjections from MPs marred the process, raising public concerns about its conduct.

Ahiafor attributed the challenges to his first experience chairing the committee and the inexperience of some newly elected MPs unfamiliar with parliamentary procedures.

Speaking on TV3, he assured Ghanaians of more structured vetting in subsequent sessions.

He acknowledged the need for patience and adaptability in handling such proceedings, emphasizing lessons learned from the initial vetting.

The Committee is set to resume vetting on January 20, 2025, with nominees scheduled through January 24.
