Appointments Committee lost its focus during my vetting; some members attempted to settle personal scores - Sam George

The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam Nartey George, criticized Parliament's Appointments Committee. He accused the committee of straying from its main purpose during his vetting session.

Mr. George said the committee focused on personal and political issues. He felt this distracted from evaluating his competence and vision for the sector.

He appeared before the committee for over five hours. During this time, he noted that discussions were mostly unrelated to his ministerial role.

Mr. George specifically mentioned Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin. He claimed Afenyo-Markin concentrated too much on his past political statements instead of his qualifications or policies.

In an interview on Channel One TV on April 14th, Mr. George expressed disappointment. He called it a missed opportunity for meaningful discussion.

He criticized some committee members for using the platform to settle political scores. Instead of assessing his readiness to lead a key ministry, they focused on irrelevant matters.

“A man must stand by what he believes in,” George stated. He found it unfortunate that the Appointments Committee was seen as a place for vengeance.

He expected more sector-related questions from Mr. Afenyo-Markin and others.

Mr. George concluded that focusing on irrelevant topics hindered meaningful scrutiny of his plans.

He reiterated that the vetting could have been a valuable chance to discuss his strategic priorities and policies but was mishandled instead.
