Approach criminal cases with integrity, fairness – High Court Judge

Juliana Amono-Niezer is the Supervising High Court Judge for the Central Region. She urged judges and jurors to handle criminal cases with integrity.

She spoke at the opening of the 2025 Criminal Assizes in Cape Coast. Amono-Niezer emphasized that criminal trials affect lives and societal peace.

She stated, “I believe our efforts will ensure fair and efficient trials.” The annual criminal assizes focus on serious crimes like murder and robbery.

The ceremony included empaneling jurors for three murder cases. One case involved Georgina Asor Botchwey, a nursing student killed in 2022.

Amono-Niezer noted that these sessions are vital for justice. They allow accused persons to be tried fairly before a judge and jury.

She stressed that success requires cooperation from all stakeholders involved. “This opening reaffirms our commitment to upholding the rule of law,” she said.

Amono-Niezer praised state attorneys, police, prison officers, and jurors for their professionalism. She also highlighted the media's role in maintaining public trust in justice.

Vincent Aboagye Nyinaku, a Principal State Attorney, echoed her sentiments. He stressed that the criminal justice system is crucial for national stability.

Nyinaku warned against failing to uphold the rule of law, which could lead to chaos. He urged everyone involved to strengthen the system and avoid corruption.

“Eschew any act of corruption in this duty,” he advised jurors. He also called for increased funding for the Attorney-General’s office.

Daniel Arthur from the Ghana Bar Association reaffirmed their commitment to justice. He pledged that members would perform their duties without fear or favor.
