The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, condemned the arrest of Alfred Ababio Kumi. Kumi is also known as Adenta Kumi. Kodua called the incident a “disgrace” to the rule of law and a “shame” for the nation.
Kodua received a distress call from Kumi early Friday morning. Kumi reported that about 20 armed men surrounded his home in Adenta. They were banging on his gate and demanding he come out. At that time, Kumi could not identify the men.
While heading to Kumi's residence, Kodua got another call from Kumi's wife. She said he had been taken away and was being sent to an office. When Kodua arrived, he found that Kumi had already been removed from his home.
Kodua expressed shock at what he saw. The front door was destroyed, and a woman in the house had allegedly been assaulted with a rifle butt. He questioned what crime Kumi had committed.
Kodua noted that Kumi acted as a responsible citizen by submitting a petition to the President. He pointed out that Kumi never received a response but was forcibly taken without explanation.
Kodua criticized authorities for not following due process during the arrest. He suggested it was an act of intimidation aimed at putting fear into Kumi.
“If someone has filed a petition, they should be invited,” he said. “They should not storm their home without a warrant.”
Kumi’s exact whereabouts are still unknown. However, Kodua confirmed they recorded the vehicle registration number used in the operation—WE 323-11—and took photos of some individuals involved.
“We are now on our way to the National Security office,” he added, “to confirm whether he is being held there.”
Background
Kumi's arrest follows his petition to President John Mahama. In this petition, he called for dissolving a committee investigating the removal of the Chief Justice.
Kumi is a former NPP parliamentary candidate for Adenta. He alleged misconduct by committee members that could compromise their inquiry's credibility.
In his petition, Kumi accused Justices Pwamang, Adibu-Asiedu, and Supreme Court Justice Yonni Kulendi of meeting with Thaddeus Sory—legal counsel for petitioner Daniel Ofori—after their first hearing on May 15, 2025.
Kumi claims they discussed issues related to his petition during dinner at Santoku Restaurant in Accra’s Airport Residential Area. A video of this supposed meeting has gone viral online, raising questions about its credibility.
