Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is the 2024 Presidential Candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He has identified several reasons for the party's defeat in the recent elections. These include arrogance of power, high living costs, and failure to reshuffle government officials. The introduction of the E-Levy and a controversial haircut policy also played a role. Many Ghanaians struggled during this time, especially with the IMF debt restructuring program.
Bawumia spoke at Takoradi Technical University during his Thank You Tour launch. He addressed claims that his religious affiliations caused the party's loss. He pointed out that internal divisions and many unfinished projects were significant factors as well.
He stated, "Reports highlighted several issues." The rising cost of living made life difficult for many Ghanaians. He noted that there was an "arrogance of power" within the party. Members urged a reshuffle after eight years, but it did not happen. They also opposed the E-Levy and warned about challenges from the DDEP.
Dr. Bawumia mentioned failures in campaigning in key regions like Western Region. He said they did not put enough effort into these areas. Internal disunity weakened their campaign efforts against the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He emphasized that going into future elections, NPP must be united. The NDC exploited their mistakes despite lacking a clear campaign message. Bawumia advised against attacking opponents to win elections effectively.
