Daasebre Nana Osei Bonsu II, the traditional ruler of Asante Mampong, has died. He served the Ashanti Kingdom for many years. Daasebre Osei Bonsu II was acting overlord in the absence of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
His death was announced on April 22, 2025. The Asantehene has been informed about his passing. Daasebre Osei Bonsu II reigned for 26 years without chieftaincy disputes. He is the only Paramount Chief installed since 1930 in Mampong.
During his tenure, peace prevailed in the Traditional Area. He was enstooled on August 25, 1996, succeeding his uncle, Nana Atakora Amaniampong II. In private life, he was known as Saint Oswald Gyimah-Kessie and was born on December 31, 1939.
He attended Prempeh College and the University of Ghana at Legon. Before becoming Mamponghene, he worked as Registrar at KNUST in Kumasi. Recently, he made headlines by addressing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) leadership in Mampong.
He gave them an ultimatum to retract anti-Ashanti comments made by some youth. On April 13, he expressed his frustration at a palace gathering. He questioned why some people were trying to create division among the community.
Daasebre Osei Bonsu emphasized that everyone should be treated equally in Mampong. His leadership will be remembered for its commitment to unity and peace within the Traditional Area.
