The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has urged the mining sector to change. He wants a focus on sustainable development and fair resource distribution.
He spoke at the "Mining in Motion" conference in Accra. The Asantehene stressed the need for the industry to maximize benefits. At the same time, it should minimize negative impacts.
"Gold, diamond, platinum, and critical minerals are gifts from God," he said. These resources are vital for global creation and national economies. If managed well, they can help break the cycle of poverty.
He pointed out issues caused by illegal mining. These include environmental damage and lost state revenue.
The Asantehene called for collaboration among stakeholders to solve these problems. He wants the industry to support Ghana's economic growth and that of Africa.
"We need to grab the nettle and move in a new direction," he stated. The gold market can lead by fostering partnerships in producer countries. This would help establish manufacturing industries that add value to raw materials.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II also highlighted the need for better cooperation between mining companies and African nations. This collaboration could promote economic development and reduce poverty.
He urged international financiers to take more risks in Africa. They should work with private sectors to boost economic growth.
The "Mining in Motion" conference runs from June 2nd to 4th, 2025. It gathers stakeholders and experts to discuss mining's future in Ghana and Africa. The goal is sustainable development and fair resource distribution in the sector.
