Asanteman mourns the passing of Mamponghene Daasebre Osei Bonsu II

The Asante Kingdom is mourning the death of Daasebre Osei Bonsu II. He was the Mamponghene and Vice President of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs. He passed away at 86, ending a distinguished 26-year reign.

The Mampong Traditional Council and Bretuo Dynasty have informed Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. The announcement took place at Manhyia Palace, led by Mamponghemaa Nana Agyakoma Difie II. This occurred amidst traditional rites and deep reflection.

Daasebre Osei Bonsu II was born Oswald Gyimah-Kessie on December 31, 1939. Before becoming chief, he was a respected lawyer and economist. He served as Registrar at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). His role combined academic excellence with cultural insight.

As Mamponghene, he was second-in-command in the Asante hierarchy. He often represented the Asantehene in state matters. His leadership focused on diplomacy, cultural preservation, unity, and development.

His last public appearance was at the recent Akwasidae festival in Mampong. There, he condemned tribalism and criticized political actors for promoting ethnic divisions during a protest over a Municipal Chief Executive nomination.

Daasebre Osei Bonsu II leaves behind a legacy that connects tradition with modern governance. He earned widespread respect within Ghana’s chieftaincy system and beyond. Tributes are pouring in from across the nation for his service to the Asante Kingdom and Ghanaian society.

Funeral arrangements will be announced soon according to royal protocols.
