The Ashanti New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus in Parliament has called for immediate government intervention following a series of destructive fires that have devastated businesses in the region.

In a statement, the caucus expressed deep concern over the latest fire outbreak near Kumasi’s Old Central Market, which destroyed several shops and threatened the livelihoods of numerous traders and business owners.

“This fire is just the latest in a series of incidents that have plagued the Ashanti Region in 2025,” the caucus noted, referencing previous fires at Suame Magazine, Kwadaso Wood Market, Konongo Mining Stores, and the recent large-scale blaze at Adum.

They raised concerns about the preparedness of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), citing a lack of modern firefighting equipment, inadequate water supply infrastructure, and insufficient personnel as key challenges.

The caucus urged the Minister for the Interior to take swift action by investigating the causes of these fires and implementing preventive measures.

“The government must prioritise equipping the Ghana National Fire Service with the necessary resources to respond effectively to these disasters,” the statement emphasized.

With the Ashanti Region serving as a major economic hub, the caucus stressed the urgency of decisive action, adding, “The people of Ashanti cannot afford to endure these repeated disasters without a concrete response from the government.”

They reaffirmed their solidarity with affected communities, vowing to continue advocating for immediate government intervention to protect lives and businesses.
